Abstract
Objective
To evaluate the effect of cervical composite restoration on the precision of digital impressions in anterior laminate veneer preparations.
Materials and methods
Forty-eight sound human maxillary central incisors were collected and prepared for anterior laminate veneer restorations following standardized preparation protocol. Specimens were grouped into two equal groups according to the presence of cervical composite restoration: With cervical restoration and without cervical restoration. All preparations were scanned 10 times repeatedly using Primescan intraoral scanner and exported as standard tessellation language (STL) files. Precision was evaluated by calculating root mean square (RMS) values through three-dimensional superimposition analysis using Geomagic Control X software. Statistical analysis was performed using student t-test at a significance level of 0.05.
Results
Veneer preparations without cervical composite restoration demonstrated significantly statistical lower RMS values compared to those with cervical restoration, indicating higher precision. The presence of cervical restoration had statistically significant effect on scan precision (P < 0.001).
Conclusions
Within the limitations of this in-vitro study, the following can be concluded: Intraoral scanner precision differences are substrate-dependent, cervical composite restorations negatively affect scanning precision of laminate veneer preparations, Primescan has high precision and exhibit single tooth deviations within clinically accepted limits.
