Abstract
Objective Reactive oxygen species are increasingly being linked to the pathophysiology of periodontal tissue damage. The one of the sensitive significant markers used for assessing oxidative damage in several conditions is 8-hydroxy-deoxyguanosine (8- OHdG). The current study aims to estimate the effects of non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease on the concentrations of 8-OHdG in plasma and saliva as oxidative stress biomarker, as well as its impact on glycemic control in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and periodontitis. Subjects and Methods The study involved 50 nonsmoking patients. 20 T2D patients with periodontitis. 20 nondiabetic with periodontitis. 10 healthy non-diabetic without periodontitis. At Baseline patient's periodontal parameters, The levels of plasma and salivary 8-OHdG, and HbA1c were measured. All periodontitis patients received non surgical periodontal therapy. Three months later, the previously mentioned clinical and biochemical markers were re-assessed. Results At baseline, Clinical parameters were significantly raised in periodontitis groups vs. healthy group, although there was no significant difference among the two periodontitis groups. At baseline, both periodontitis groups had comparable mean plasma and salivary 8-OHdG levels. On the other hand, statistically significant greater amounts were seen when compared to the healthy group. After three months of periodontal treatment, clinical parameters, salivary and plasma 8-OHdG concentrations in the periodontitis groups were considerably reduced. The T2D group showed a decrease in HbA1c, however it was not considered statistically significant (p=0.296). Conclusions Nonsurgical periodontal treatment is effective in decline oxidative stress in T2D patients with periodontitis, with no impact on glycemic control.
