Abstract

Objective: this clinical study aimed to evaluation of soft tissue changes of the peri -implant area and patient satisfaction for two implants assisted overdenture with all-PEEK versus all-zirconia telescopic attachment.

Materials and Methods: Ten patients who were complete edentulous and had a history of complaining about the instability and poor retention of their mandibular complete dentures were chosen. Each patient received a conventional denture for one month then two dental implants were drilled in the mandibular canine area. Implant overdentures were retained by using telescopic attachments. According to the telescopic attachment coping material type, the patients were grouped as: Group I: copings (primary and secondary) were fabricated from zirconia. Group II: copings (primary and secondary) were fabricated from PEEK. Peri-implant soft tissue status was assessed and the following indices were evaluated: Modified Gingival index, Modified Plaque index, and Probing depth. Patient satisfaction was also assessed by using the OHIP 14 questionnaire. Assessments were done at zero time, three months, and six months after overdenture delivery.

Results: no significant difference was found in plaque and gingival indices and probing depth among all-PEEK and all-zirconia overdentures attachments groups at all follow-up periods except at T3, regarding patient satisfaction, a significant difference was noticed among the two groups with better results related to all-PEEK group. For both groups (all-PEEK and all-zirconia), significant improvements were detected for gingival index, plaque index and probing depth index where T6 scores were better than T3 and T3 was better than T0.

Conclusions: All-PEEK mandibular overdentures telescopic attachment are preferred over all-zirconia because they improve peri-implant soft tissue status and patient satisfaction.
