Abstract

Objectives: Evaluation of clasped and clasp-less mandibular Kennedy class I implant supported partial overdenture with acrylic or flexible denture bases by maximum biting force measurement.

Materials and methods: Six partially edentulous male patients with mandibular Kennedy class I and completely edentulous maxilla were selected. Two implants were installed on mandibular first molar areas. Patients were classified based on the duration of their mandibular RPD use, which was characterized by two different denture bases and clasp statuses. Group 1 received metallic implant-assisted removable partial overdentures with acrylic denture bases and combination clasps for one month, then the retentive arm clasp was removed. Group 2 received metallic implant-assisted removable partial overdenture with flexible denture bases and combination clasps for one month. Subsequently, the retentive arm clasp was removed. The maximum biting force was measured immediately and after one month of adaptation. Statistical analysis was performed using repeated measures ANOVA followed by Bonferroni tests for multiple comparisons and independent samples t-test.

Results: There was a significant difference between clasp status for both metal acrylic and flexible IA-RP immediately after insertion and a significant difference in MBF between observation times for metal acrylic and flexible IA-RPD. However, there was no significant difference in MBF between groups for IA-RPD with claps (P=.421) and without claps (P=.182) and there was no significant difference in MBF between clasp status for metal flexible IA-RPD (P=.391).

Conclusions: The retentive arm of the clasp is essential in implant-supported partial overdentures for establishing and controlling biting force. There are no pronounced biting force differences between rigid and flexible denture bases.
