Abstract
Objective: To assess the effect of the addition of nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate (NACP) and chlorhexidine (CHX) on the properties of an etch-and-rinse adhesive regarding the bond strength to caries-affected dentine (CAD) and the NACP remineralization efficacy.
Materials and Methods: Dentine surfaces from 80 human molars were subjected to pH cycling and then divided into 4 groups (n=20): adhesive without additives (control group), 5% wt/wt NACP added to the adhesive (NACP group), 0.1% CHX added to the adhesive (CHX group), and addition of 5%wt/wt NACP and 0.1% CHX to the adhesive (NACP+CHX group). After acid etching, the adhesive for each group was applied and composite resin was built up respectively. Following a storage period of 6 months, microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) were done. The data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA, Monte Carlo tests and the significance level was set at ≤0.05.
Results: The µTBS results showed the highest mean among CHX group (30.3 ±5.03 MPa) followed by NACP+CHX group (25.11 ±13.79 MPa) then NACP group (16.28 ±2.65 MPa) and the control group (14.72 ±3.05 MPa). SEM with EDX demonstrated the highest mean for Calcium (Ca) and Phosphorous (P) levels among NACP group (43.04 ±0.021wt%) (14.76 ±0.25wt%) followed by control group (32.50 ±0.014wt%) (13.18 ±0.07wt%) then CHX group (31.32 ±0.02wt%) (13.15 ±0.035wt%) and NACP+CHX group (31.30 ±0.14wt%) (15.35 ±0.06wt%).
Conclusions: The addition of chlorhexidine and nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate to the adhesive maintained the bond strength to caries-affected dentine by significantly enhancing its efficacy (P
